Breaking an almost six year musician silence, UK singer and songwriter, Adele, released “Easy on Me.” Released on October 15, this is her lead single for her upcoming album “30,” set to release on November 19. In a tweet about the album she said, “I was certainly nowhere near where I’d hoped to be when I started it nearly three years ago.”
Three years ago Adele filed for divorce from her now ex-husband Simon Konecki and reveals that the inspiration
behind her lyrics is from this divorce and her search for happiness. This single, like most of her songs, is a piano ballad packed full of emotions. As soon as you hit play, you are hit hard with soft piano notes that carry those emotions.
“Easy on Me” broke the UK national record for most streams in a week with 24 million streams making this her third chart-topping song after “Someone Like You” and “Hello.” Even after six years of silence, she’s still making chart-topping, record breaking songs.
Adele has said in many interviews that this album, other than opening up about her divorce, is a way to explain the split to her nine year old son. She told British Vogue that, “I just felt like I wanted to explain to him, through this record, when he’s in his twenties or thirties, who I am and why I voluntarily chose to
dismantle his entire life in pursuit of my own happiness.” She later, in the same interview, said that, “It made him really unhappy sometimes. And that’s a real wound for me that I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to heal.”
I see this upcoming album as a new beginning for Adele and believe she feels the same as she said in her tweet announcing the album, “I’ve painstakingly rebuilt my house and my heart since then and this album narrates it.” She then ends the tweet with “Home is where the heart is x.”
The theme of “home” and “houses” is shown frequently in her works and can be seen mostly in her music videos. In the “Easy on Me” music video she is seen packing up and leaving the house, signifying a new and different era of her life.
Many of Adele’s fans relate heavily to her lyrics, “I changed who I was to put you both first/But now I give up” and her repeating chorus, “Go easy on Me, baby/ I was still a child/Didn’t get the chance to/ Feel the world around me/Had no time to choose/what I chose to do/So go easy on me.” In response, followers have been posting content about her song on TikTok.
I personally love the song, I think it is the perfect way to start her album especially after so many years of radio silence. I see this album as a new era and don’t really know what to expect. Adele said in her Vogue interview that this album will differ from her others as her previous ones put the blame on others while this one is her realizing that she’s the problem.
My favorite lines are: “There ain’t no room for things to change/ when we are both so deeply stuck in our ways/ You can’t deny how hard I have tried” because I can relate to them. Plus, in my opinion, the power and tone of Adele’s voice throughout the song, but especially during those lines, is amazing. This bridge is one of my favorites. I can’t wait to hear what Adele has prepared for the rest of her album.
