October is LGBTQ History month
The month of October is LGBTQ+ History Month. During October, people celebrate historic events regarding LGBTQ+ community. Some of the historic events include the Stonewall Riots in 1969, which is when people protested against police raiding the Stonewall Inn, a place frequently visited by members of the LGBTQ community. The first Gay Pride March happened right after the Stonewall Riots in 1970. The Supreme Court case Obergefell vs. Hodges is another historic event, which legalized gay marraige in 2015.
There are also some special days in October regarding members of the LGBTQ+ community . The first week of October is National Mental Health Awareness Week. October 10th is National Mental Health Day and National Coming Out Day is October 11. GLAAD´s Spirit Day is on October 20, where people wear purple in celebration of LGBTQ+ youth. October 26 is Intersex Awareness Day. The last full week of October is Asexual Awareness Week. These events are great ways to show support for the LGBTQ community.
Showing support for LGBTQ people can make a big difference. According to NAMI ¨High school students who identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual are more than four times as likely to have attempted suicide compared to their heterosexual peers.¨ However, support for LGBTQ students can decrease their risk of suicide. The Trevor Project states that: ¨LGBTQ youth who live in a community that is accepting of LGBTQ people reported much lower rates of attempting suicide than those who do not.¨ Parcipitating in LGBTQ history month can be a great way to show support for the LGBTQ community.
