The Future Farmers of America’s (FFA) national competition is a huge opportunity for students across the country involved in FFA who are interested in agriculture. This year, and for several years past, FHS has helped represent Virginia at nationals. Hundreds of colleges, organizations and workshops come out to Indianapolis to help students find college and career opportunities and aid them in finding a path in agriculture that is perfect for them. The biggest attraction is the
expo, containing college representatives and fun activities for all.
Becca Henegar, an FHS graduate and now sophomore at University of Tennessee was awarded her American Degree. This is the final level of award one can receive in FFA, a large accomplishment for the previous Fauquier FFA president. But the formalities of nationals isn’t the only thing that brings FFA members together. Senior Taylor Parker said, “the time I get to spend with everyone” is her favorite part of going to nationals. Being able to connect with different people who share the same interests as you is a unique experience for these members. Making countless friends with varying backgrounds and lifestyles is what makes this convention so vital to maintaining the agriculture community.
The fun of nationals isn’t limited to the stadium, as members are able to attend activities that create memories that last a lifetime. Going to the rodeo has come to be an FFA tradition at Fauquier, with members looking forward to it every year. Enjoying large, laughter filled dinners is a second ritual the members share. Senior Taylor Parker confirms, “Going to dinner and hanging out” is one of her favorite memories. And, after dinner, returning to their shared hotel floor to hang out and relax together is the best way to end the day. Parker continues that, “whenever we come back I feel like we always have a stronger connection.”
