There are many classes at FHS that don’t get the recognition they deserve, one of them being the Guitar Ensemble class. Students that struggle with finding an interesting and fun class to take should consider it. It is an easy way to learn how to play the guitar without having to do it outside of school or having to pay for it.
The Guitar Ensemble class can be very fun, although some might think it can get tedious. Senior Sam Boulter said, “It’s fun, but I mean it gets a little slow sometimes.” Other students tend to enjoy the class more, utilizing their extensive past experience with music. “It’s definitely a fun class to be in, I enjoy playing a lot of musical instruments…I enjoy the class,” said sophomore Eleanor Rose.
The way students are graded isn’t complicated, as class work is more ‘hands on’ and involves less paperwork. Senior Delaney Stone explained briefly how it works, saying, “We go in, and we practice, we get tuned, and then we do group assignments, and, at the end of the week, he gives us a grade for participation.” Stone also mentioned that part of the grading process is based on skill. “We do a playing test, and we get graded on how well we can play it,” said Stone.
If you have never played the guitar, you can still take the class. Stone said it is her first time playing and mentioned how the class is an easy, cost-saving measure. “I’ve wanted to learn how to play a guitar, and I thought it would be an easy way to not have to pay for lessons,” said Stone. Senior Kris Arellano commented on the uniqueness of the class, saying, “The school provides something that I want to learn.”
Students should take advantage of these underrecognized classes that offer free learning opportunities, because not every school gives these types of opportunities. The guitar class is a unique experience for all students who attend and can not only be educational, but fun.
