One year ago, Fauquier High School (FHS) started the Unified P.E. program that would bring students joy all over the school. Unified P.E. unites students with special needs in P.E. class with their peers. Unified P.E. originally started as a club two years ago. Students would be able to get passes and go to the club during their academic enrichment (AE) time. This year was the first time Unified P.E. was offered as a class.
Students have found this program to be enlightening and one of their favorite classes. “I think it just makes their day and I enjoy sports so [I am] able to do what I love and make kids happy,” said senior Dylan Donner. Unified P.E. is all about making a difference. “My favorite thing is getting to see the kids smile and helping out and knowing they are having fun. Also knowing that we’re making an impact in their day,” senior Addie Gorg stated. A participant in the Unified P.E. program, Reagan Robinson also enjoys her class saying, “I enjoy P.E.… I really like playing basketball.” Students all seem to enjoy this class.
Unified P.E. is also an organization. This means that with every sports unit the class does, they will also participate in games against other schools’ Unified P.E. programs. Each student is assigned a buddy. At the beginning of class, the buddies do laps and play sports. The second half of the class is spent practicing the designated sport for any upcoming games. “Everyone is always working with a buddy and some of us will take laps and then halfway through class we will work on basketball,” Gorg stated. This program has had a severely positive effect on the school and students are happy that this program is now offered as a class.
The success of Unified P.E has been immense. Students and staff are so excited to see our school moving forward and opening up new opportunities. Unified P.E. has brought so much joy for the entire school. This program’s success gives so much hope for future programs and clubs to come.
Unified P.E. has brought joy to students all over FHS. This program allows students to make new friends and have a good time. Students enjoy how interactive and fun this program is and are encouraging others to get involved. Unified P.E. has done a great job of uniting students all over not just FHS, but schools all around the country.
