At Fauquier High School (FHS), Feb. 14, or Valentine’s Day isn’t just about romance. It’s about spreading kindness and showing appreciation for those who go unnoticed. This year, students from the National Honor Society(NHS) and the National Art Honor Society(NAHS) are making special gifts to recognize the hard-working staff.
One part of the project is a Valentine’s card fundraiser, where students can purchase cards to share messages of positivity and appreciation. The money raised will go toward funding the school, including community service paintings and murals. “Selling Valentine’s cards is a way to spread positivity and bring people together,” said Senior Mason Aliff. “At the same time, it helps us raise funds for projects that make our school a more welcoming place,” Aliff adds.
Other than the fundraising, students and officers involved in NHS also want to use this holiday to show gratitude to staff members who work hard to keep the school running. Each month, the National Honor Society chooses a different group of staff to honor, and for February, they selected the janitorial team.
“We wanted to do something special for them because they do so much for us every single day, and we don’t always take the time to recognize that. So instead of the usual candy grams, we’re making lollipop bouquets and giving them Starbucks gift cards to show our appreciation,” said senior, Madelynne Martin.
Senior, Neema Kamunya, NHS president, explains that the goal is to create kindness and gratitude. Kamunya adds that every staff member deserves to feel valued saying, “This month it’s the janitors, but throughout the year we make sure different groups are recognized.”
The students at FHS are turning Valentine’s Day into more of a holiday about kindness, appreciation and community.
