Meet the newest edition to the special education team, Ashby Nye! Nye started her journey at Appalachian State University and after graduating, became a long-term substitute teacher here at Fauquier High School. In the previous year, she had been a substitute for Sports Medicine in addition to Special Education English. Her newest position is a Special Education teacher in the FHS intellectual disability program where she spends every day with the amazing kids in the class. Nye has many things she loves about the school. She says, “There is honestly so much, I think the culture here is really unique to FHS… I like that I know a lot of people.”
Nye’s day starts with picking up her students who get dropped off by their parents. Afterward, they all get breakfast from the cafeteria to prepare for their day. Once back in the classroom, Nye says they will work on daily activities: “life skills, laundry, dishes, math or reading.” Next is P.E., where they will spend time with other FHS students playing different games. The rest of the day Nye teaches lessons and more life skills. Outside of her day-to-day life at Fauquier, Nye loves to spend time outside. Nye says she enjoys “sitting outside, hiking, or any other outdoor activity.”
Fauquier High School has a family-like atmosphere and this couldn’t be more true for Nye. Nye works right down the hall from her mother, Nancy Nye. Ashby Nye states, “It’s really helpful, just to know the ins and outs of being a teacher.”
Goals are very important when going into a new career. Nye says, “I love this job so far… If it’s a forever thing, I don’t know, but just figuring out what I want and how to go about that is my long-term goal.”
Nye is distinguished from normal teachers because she only has five students. Nye stated, “I get a very unique experience with being able to be one-on-one with them all day.” Nye will continue to do great things at Fauquier and is a super amazing addition to the team.
