One of the best ways to stay involved with the school is Spirit Week. Spirit Week is a fun way to get ready for the upcoming weekend, which involves the pep rally, the parade and the homecoming dance. Students get the opportunity to dress up according to the themes chosen by the Student Council Association (SCA). This year’s homecoming spirit week themes consist of, ‘Merica Monday, Twin Tuesday, Generation Day, Country vs. Country Club and Falcon Friday.
On ‘Merica Monday students dress in all red white and blue, representing the colors of the U.S. flag. Twin Tuesday, students find a “twin” and dress alike or dress with a similar theme. Wednesday, every grade level has a different “generation” they are supposed to dress as. Freshmen are babies, sophomores are college students, juniors are barbeque dads and soccer moms and seniors are senior citizens. Country vs. Country Club is where students choose between dressing like a cowboy or a rich kid. Falcon Friday each class has a different school color assigned to them. Freshmen wear gray, sophomores wear black, juniors wear white and seniors wear red.
Some students love to go above and beyond for spirit week, one being junior Kiersten Clark. Clark is always wearing the most extravagant outfits she can think of and many are excited to see what she will be dressed in. Clark says that her favorite day to dress up was ‘Merica Monday, where she dressed as George Washington. Following the day up, she dressed as Gru from “Despicable Me” and her “twin” was a minion. Another student who loves to dress up is senior, Madelynne Martin. On Wednesday, Martin could have easily been mistaken for a woman five times her age. Martin says, “My favorite day has been Generation Day, I got to dress as an old grandma and got to walk with a walker.”
The best way to make outfits for Spirit Week is by using items that are already in the closet. Martin says, “Some of the pieces I have worn I already own, others I order on Amazon, some I borrow from friends.” Clark also added that she buys outfit pieces from the Spirit of Halloween store “because it is normally open around this time of year.”
Both Clark and Martin are in the SCA, and their job is to decide what themes should be chosen for Spirit Week. Clark said that each class gets to choose a theme for the week, “‘Merica Monday and Falcon Friday are given because we do it every year. The juniors, sophomores and seniors each pick a theme [for the week].” Martin explained exactly how each theme gets selected, she said, “We had a whole bunch of ideas, some we found on social media and from other schools and we just went through with the process of elimination.” Spirit Week was such a fun way for students to involve themselves with the school and the week was a great preparation for the exciting weekend that followed.
