The NAHS (National Art Honor Society) at FHS has started a fundraiser entitled “buy one blanket, give one free.” The NAHS community is a fun place where students participate in exciting art projects and where students also get to spend time with their peers. They create a variety of different art projects, host fundraisers and more.
This fundraiser is the proud creation of the NAHS community. Dawn Brown, FHS art teacher, explained that “this was a National Art Honor Society sponsored blanket drive. The whole intent from this idea was to buy a blanket, give a blanket.” They made all the blankets and she explained how it all works, “Every blanket we sell, we give a blanket to SPCA.” SPCA is a shelter for animals located in Warrenton, Va. Additionally, Senior Rhianna Mullins explained “We also wanted to connect it to a good cause so we decided to find a place to donate to and we ended up choosing the SPCA.”
Freshman Amaya Hill was one of the students that helped sell the blankets. She explained that “one blanket cost ten dollars and another blanket ended up being donated to a shelter, we actually made around forty dollars in sales.” Hill also shared that she “had to walk around the whole school trying to convince students to buy a blanket.” Mullins is trying to get the National art society’s name out there and more known. Mullins stated, “We want to find more new ideas so more people join [NAHS] throughout the years…because we did stuff for Valentines Day that people know about now, so I think I want to keep doing that each year so people look forward to it every year.”
Mullins explained the reason for creating the blanket fundraiser, saying, “We always like to come up with new projects every year, and I had the idea of doing tie blankets….I saw that it was a trend online and we thought of doing that.” However, she explained how she wanted to add to the idea of it and gave an explanation to what the society decided to do. She followed along saying, “We also wanted to connect it to a good cause, so we decided to find a place to donate to, and we ended up choosing the SPCA.” Mullins said what she hopes this blanket fundraiser brings to the National Art society is for them to get more known. Mullins quoted “I want to try to get our [society] name out there too and do a good cause out of it.” Brown explained how this was a new idea for the society, saying, “This is the first time that we tried it. One of the students really wanted to do this, a concept of make a blanket, give a blanket and I think it’s even better because we’re doing it for the animals.”
