Holiday music is inescapable during winter, played widely across homes, stores and cafes. It’s a yearly staple in celebration for many, and as always, artists have begun to either announce or release their new Christmas music.
Mariah Carey, most known for her song “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” has had an iconic impact on holiday music. The song has 1.8 billion streams on Spotify and is included in the National Recording Registry, signifying its cultural impact. Recently, Carey has been touring for her Christmas Time show, which began on Nov. 6, 2024, and ends soon on Dec. 17, 2024. With the 30th anniversary of Mariah Carey’s “Merry Christmas” album, she decided to rerelease the album with all new covers of the original songs. The rerelease is planned to come out on Dec. 6, 2024. Some songs are already available on streaming platforms, but they are from the original album. The new covers themselves won’t be accessible until the release date.
Micheal Bublé is widely known for his music, but oftentimes, his covers outshine his original music. This has been the case since the release of “Christmas” in 2011. Since “Christmas” by Micheal Bublé came out, it has been heavily associated with holiday music. However, Bublé hasn’t released a Christmas album since then; instead, he has sparsely released Christmas covers as singles. Earlier this year, on Nov. 18, Bublé released another cover, this time of “Maybe This Christmas” with Carly Pearce. This has drummed up excitement within his audience as it’s his first release of any music since 2022. As for now, it’s unsure whether this is a one-time thing or if Bublé is getting ready to make waves in the music industry once again.
Laufey is an Icelandic artist who has recently gained traction for her unique vocals and comforting music. Though Laufey has been creating music since 2020, she’s only recently gone viral. This has mainly been through sharing her songs on social media, where they’ve been widely popularized. She has released several Christmas covers in the past, putting her spin on old classics. This is seen in her past collaboration with Norah Jones in 2023 on “Christmas With You,” a single containing a cover of “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” and “Better Than Snow,” and in her collaboration on “Ain’t Christmas” with Alexander 23 in 2022. On Nov. 1, 2024, Laufey returned to the holiday genre again and released “A Very Laufey Holiday.” The Extended Play (EP) includes five covers sung by Laufey and provides a fresh take on the old classics. It’s a worthwhile listen for those ready to celebrate the winter holiday through music. The new and upcoming releases of Christmas music are fascinating. Music can add a comforting flare to the season. With these releases, fans of the artists will have new material to listen to and remind them of the joy brought through the holidays.
