In recent years, Fauquier High School (FHS) has switched from recognizing a single valedictorian to recognizing the top 10 percent of the graduating class; this system is called the Top Decile. The change aimed to make students feel included and reduce academic pressure. Although the change appeared to be progressive at first, the title of valedictorian remains a more meaningful and effective way to recognize one’s dedication to one’s studies and to push for academic excellence among students.
The valedictorian represents the highest level of academic achievement within a graduating class. It is an honor earned by having the highest weighted GPA (grade point average) in a graduating class. This tradition, however, was changed in 2017 when Fauquier County Public Schools (FCPS1) decided to shift away from naming a single valedictorian. This was part of a broader move to eliminate absolute class ranking in favor of the Top Decile system.
Unlike the Top Decile system, which recognizes a broader category for fairness, the valedictorian title establishes an inspirational benchmark for all students to strive for, rather than settling for adequacy within a fixed percentage range.
Additionally, its symbolic value cannot be understated. The valedictorian speech, delivered at graduation, collectively represents the voice of the class.
Though critics of the valedictorian system may argue that it recognizes only the effort of one student rather than collective effort, even seniors in the top decile state that they would prefer to have a valedictorian. “It encourages academic achievement; more than just knowing you’re in the top percent of your class, said senior Taylor Ovessi, who’s part of Top Decile. “That being said, there are still ways to recognize students’ achievements without eliminating the most sought-after title in high school.”
Even in cases when inclusivity should be prioritized, it should not come at the expense of recognizing accomplishment. The top decile system, though well-intentioned, risks diluting the significance of academic achievement.
Ultimately, the valedictorian model promotes individual achievement and preserves a standard of excellence that the top decile cannot. For these reasons, it remains a superior recognition system compared to the Top Decile system.
