“Everything Everything” is a teen romance drama about the sensations that accompany a first love. This novel is about a girl named Madeline, who’s been living her whole life with a terrible immune system. She’s allergic to everything outside and inside. Madeline never gets to leave her home and lives with her mother, who is also her doctor and nurse. She falls in love with the boy next door, Olly, whose bedroom window she can see from her own as they pass notes and get to know each other.
This novel is a sweet love story, but it also explores how love can compel someone to take risks. Madeline and Olly go on a vacation together even though Madeline shouldn’t be out of the house because she could become sick and die. While this book is a page-turner, the intimacy escalated a little too quickly. She gets a little trace of love and, while the book is romantic, they ended up doing things they shouldn’t. Madeline should have proved to herself and her mom that she should go out on her own. Going out with someone you love and taking a risk with them can be dangerous.
This novel sends the wrong message to the world and says that you should risk your life for love. Madeline shouldn’t have gone on a trip with someone that she didn’t really know. When Olly and Madeline went on the trip together, Madeline’s mom was not aware of the trip. Madeline’s mom could have told her no and to stay home safe with her. The novel is a great and easy read, but definitely for older teens and young adults because of the romance and complex themes.
The characters are great, but overall the romance went a little overboard. Especially at their age, that’s not realistically okay. In this novel, it does teach us life lessons about love and romance by showing us that even when we are young we still make mistakes, but we also need to learn that going through love is a choice and even when you love someone you shouldn’t risk your life for them.
