After the recent debut of “A Minecraft Movie” on April 4 2025, many were left surprised by its tremendous success. From the beginning, everyone assumed that it was doomed to fail. How could a movie about a video game starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa not be a complete flop? Despite these doubts, Warner Bros. created a film that, although bad by traditional metrics, was hilarious and very fun to watch.
The Minecraft movie is about a boy who yearns for the mines but ends up trapped in a corporate job. This leads him to escape through a portal to the world of Minecraft. After being imprisoned by the piglins, his dog brings the key to this world back to Earth, where a middle school-aged boy finds it and reopens the portal. The boy, along with his sister and a few other characters, goes to this Minecraft world and becomes trapped after the key breaks. In order to escape, they must find a new key and adapt to the new challenges that the world of Minecraft poses.
From its conception, this movie had almost everyone doubting its success. But this lack of faith led to its success, drawing many people who just wanted to ridicule it. Nearly every theatre on premiere night was filled with chaos and cheering as everyone excitedly anticipated Black’s many iconic lines as Steve. It wasn’t just Steve who contributed to how ridiculous the experience of watching it was. Characters like Momoa as a retired video game champion turned failing business owner and Jennifer Coolidge, who has a relationship with a Minecraft villager, just threw the whole thing over the top. All of these actors did a great job executing the story given to them and left very little room for complaints.
Unfortunately, just because it was funny does not mean it was a good movie. The plot was basic at best, leaving very little to follow. The characters also felt shallow and lacked development. Obviously, they relied on people to be too busy laughing to pay attention to the details that were lacking. Despite the plot, no one seemed disappointed since, realistically, no one showed up expecting to watch a good movie.
The other thing that helped with the poor story was the excellent cinematics. They captured the world of Minecraft just about as perfectly as they could have with seamless animation that looked great. The music also hit the mark, with some great originals written by Black himself. This is the third year in a row that he has come out with absolute banger songs in his movies, with “Kung Fu Panda 4” last year and the “Mario Movie” before that.
The Minecraft movie is a unique experience. It’s not a good movie by the standards that usually make a good watch, but somehow, it far exceeds expectations and offers an enjoyable viewing experience. Sit down with friends or family and watch it for its limitless comedic value and fantastic soundtrack.
