A 2000’s classic makes a comeback in theaters with its exciting new sequel. “The Devil Wears Prada” is a 2000’s classic about a not-so-savvy main character, Andrea “Andy” Sachs (played by Anne Hathaway). Andy takes a job as a secretary for Miranda Priestley (played by Meryl Streep), the owner of a top New York fashion magazine called Runway. Andrea Sachs’ life has been flipped since getting this job, changing everything she has ever known. At the end of the first movie, Andy leaves the world of fashion to pursue her dream of becoming a journalist.
The first movie took the hearts of many people in the 00s and well after. This rom-com was a wonderful look into the world of fashion. The movie was remarkable, prompting people to ask whether the sequel would be as good or a disappointment to Miranda Priestley herself.
Though the sequel was not a disappointment, it definitely did not reach the bar set by the first movie. In summary, the movie’s sequel started with Andy and a whole bunch of other reporters getting fired, and with an article about Miranda’s latest scandal, which had gone viral. Andy gets hired by Runway as their new features editor to help smooth over the scandal and other issues at the Company.
This addition to the franchise was amazing to watch, but the movie itself felt a little too similar to the first movie. The only differences that could be noticed were that Andy has a newfound confidence, which shows a lot of development in her character between the two movies. What really changed in the sequel was the Human Resources (HR) plotline about Miranda’s treatment of her employees, which made her lose her iconic attitude.
There felt like something was missing throughout the movie: the emotional depth we got from Andy, and how she was struggling with the emotional capacity of the assistant job for Miranda from the first movie, and trying to fit into the world of fashion. It felt like the sequel had no emotional depth and was just a little bland. Other than that, the movie was splendid, with an array of qualities the sequel had in store for viewers.
Throughout the movie, we get to see fan-favorite characters return, such as Emily Charlton (played by Emily Blunt) and Nigel Kippling (played by Stanley Tucci), as well as new faces. Many different people make cameos in the movie, like Heidi Klum, Donatella Versace, and Lady Gaga, who sings her new single “Shape of a Woman” on an actual runway.
The fashion throughout the movie was on point. Everyone looked glamorous and modern, yet the outfits had a certain elegance. The movie had an amazing soundtrack that paired well with its aesthetic. The soundtrack was phenomenal; it featured many fantastic artists, including Lady Gaga, Doja Cat, SZA, Laufey, and many other amazing female artists. The iconic song “Vogue” by Madonna appears in the movie. All the scenes looked amazing; the houses looked like someone would actually live there; New York City looked as iconic as ever; and there were even scenes in Milan, Italy, which were beautiful. All of these elements made this movie very visually and musically appealing.
“The Devil Wears Prada 2” was a satisfying sequel, which many movies can’t pull off. It has brought back the nostalgia from the first movie in a way that’s both impressive and effortless, but it did not upstage nor ruin the first movie. Throughout the second movie, there were many nods to the first one, which fans will find fun and exciting. This movie is a must-watch, especially since the first one was so iconic, and it’s incredible to see in theaters.
