“House of Gucci” showcases the tragic murder of Maurizio Gucci through film

IMDb

“House of Gucci” features the true and scandalous story of the murder of Maurizio Gucci.

“House of Gucci” is based on one of the largest scandals in fashion history: The murder of Maurizio Gucci. Grandson of Gucci House founder, Guccio Gucci, Maurizio Gucci was one of the most memorable members of the Gucci family and in the fashion industry.

Patrizia Reggiani, Gucci’s wife, played by no other than the talented Lady Gaga, had one goal in mind, to build the Gucci name. Coming from a middle-upper-class family, Reggiani wanted nothing more than to be a part of the luxurious world of fashion, fame, and wealth. Being a Gucci was something more than just a name, it was a lifestyle.
“House of Gucci” primarily followed the story of Gucci and Reggiani’s love story, while abruptly ending it with the murder of Gucci. The second I heard the movie was coming out I was ecstatic. Two of my favorite things, fashion and Lady Gaga were coming together in what I thought would be the movie of the year.

After watching the movie, I can say my feelings have drastically changed about Patrizia Reggiani and Maurizio Gucci. I know I can’t trust the full portrayal of the characters, but I didn’t realize how intense and controlling Reggiani was to Gucci. I never knew one of the most famous businessmen didn’t even want to head his family’s company.
The movie started to get good after Reggiani and Gucci divorced (1991). Reggiani went crazy and did everything she could to get Gucci back claiming he needed more of a presence in their daughter Alessandra’s life. Though she seemed to be unsatisfied with the affair Gucci was having with an old friend, Reggiani was more focused on their daughter and the future of the Gucci brand.
Although I did enjoy the movie because of the drama and scandal, I was disappointed with the constant skipping around. Each storyline would abruptly end which left me either confused or unsatisfied. I felt like I was missing big chunks of the story. The Gucci family valued privacy, so lack of information on the movie creator’s part was most likely the reason for the skipping. For a two and a half hour movie, I was expecting a little more.

The aspect that drew me in the most was the aesthetics of the film. Whether the scenes were located in Italy or New York, the mood of the movie was perfect and helped set the tone for each scene. Each actor/actress had to learn Italian accents and embrace the Gucci family’s Italian culture. This added a level of realism to the story.

The Gucci family is widely known for their influence on both the fashion and business world. I believe this movie is worth watching because of the historical importance it places. The murder of Maurizio Gucci is an important event in the business world and is worth knowing.
