Here at Fauquier High School (FHS), many electives are available for students. One of those many electives is the Sports Medicine class, taught and directed by Garrett Farmerie. The class is located in the science hallway, in room 705. The class helps students learn how to properly care for a sports-related injury. This unique class is one that students have to apply to take, unlike most electives at FHS. Sophomore Claudia Harris was one of the students who chose to apply for this class in the fall semester of 2024. “I decided to take this class because it can teach you how to help others and yourself if someone is injured, and you can tell what your injury is,” Harris stated. This is one of the many things that the students in this class will be able to learn.
All the electives held here at FHS have different schedules; one day in one class could look completely different from another class. “On a typical day, we fill up water, take notes, drive around on the cart, do drills and practice our training and practicals,” stated Harris. Farmerie shares, “A typical day in a Sports Medicine Class starts with some chores like cleaning/filling coolers for the in-season teams. We then go over who will be staying for games during the week. We follow that up with a lecture, activity or practical skill practice [like taping or surface anatomy palpations].” This class is perfect for anyone who loves being active and experiencing new things. Because Sports Medicine is an interactive course, students can practice training what a real-life injury could look like, using their special training from this class.
The students in the Sports Medicine class enjoy the laid-back setup of the course. “I like [Farmerie], and I heard that it was a good experience,” Harris said. The class is also a great idea for anyone who wants to study sports medicine in the future, or just wants to study it and not go into that field. Some careers that are related to this class are physical therapists, exercise psychologists and athletic trainers. These jobs all help prevent athletes from getting hurt and help athletes recover from injuries.
Overall, this class is a great way for students to get involved in sports medicine training and learn how to prevent certain athletic-related injuries.
