Cosmetology Class is a (Hair)Cut Above the Rest

FHS’s cosmetology program is a three year course where students can obtain a cosmetology license. Most cosmetology programs cost around 15 thousand dollars just to get a license, while our school’s program offers all of the same services for free. Senior Jaelynn Jasper said, “You get your cosmetology license and you’re able to use that to go and work in hair and it doesn’t have to just be hair, it can be… nails [and other cosmetology disciplines].”

Cosmetology covers everything in the realm of personal care. Cosmetology teacher Susan Ross said, “The first year we cover the basics which are roller sets, wet hair styling, manicuring, pedicuring [and] we do a little bit of skincare with a bit of eyebrow tweezing,” said Ross.

“The second year is hair cutting. Lots of hair cutting, lots of styling, evening styling…We just started doing some chemical wraps for permanent waving and learning a little bit of foiling.” She added, “And then in cosmetology three, we’re really getting ready for state board [exams],” Ross then explained what to expect in the third year of the course skills, “but the first half of the year in the fall we do perming, coloring, relaxing and clipper cutting. In the spring we kind of raffle that up and then we get ready for state board exams which is a two day exam. It’s a written and a hands on exam.”

Ross has an impressive career and previously worked at a salon for 13 years and taught stylists. Students only have good things to say about Ross and the cosmetology course. “She is amazing,” Senior Brittan Austin said. Senior Starr Corum said, “My favorite thing to learn was hair coloring like all of the chemical services.”

The cosmetology class is widely known as a favorite program here at FHS with a talented teacher. After the three year course and passing a state board exam, students can graduate highschool with a cosmetology license and be ready to enter the workforce much better prepared than most.
