Austin Evans, Fauquier High School’s (FHS) newest addition to the science department, is teaching Biology. Evans has been teaching for three years, with this year being his first teaching at FHS. He has been involved in FHS in the past as a substitute and has already created some relationships with the students here. As an FHS alumni, Evans has a strong connection with the school community. Evans finds enjoyment in caring for his students, both in the classroom and during extracurricular activities.
Being an FHS class of 2016 graduate gave Evans a chance to experience the school in the past. Since then, Evans noticed notable changes. Technology is a significant factor in the difference between him being a student and a teacher at FHS. “When I went to high school here, we were just getting started with the technology, and the policy was actually bring your own device,” stated Evans.
Evans was born in Colorado Springs, Colo., but grew up in Warrenton, Va. “My family moved here in seventh grade to take care of my grandmother,” Evans stated. Growing up in a home with his mom as a teacher, Evans saw some drawbacks of teaching. Experiencing the educational system from behind the scenes as a child did not inspire Evans to become an educator.“I told myself I was never gonna be a teacher. Well, as you can imagine, here I find myself, he said.”
Even though Evans has started teaching fairly recently, he enjoys it and is very warmhearted towards his students. One of Evans’ favorite parts of teaching is seeing his students grow and succeed. “My favorite part about my job is helping students become the best version of themselves,” Evans remarked. Evans mentioned his teaching strengths are helping his students stay on track. “I think my strengths are definitely caring about the students and making sure that everyone stays organized.”
Not only does Evans teach Biology at FHS, but he is also the Assistant Director of the marching band. Outside of his school life, Evans’ main hobby includes being a musician. “I play the flute, and I’m learning a little bit of banjo… then I also play the clarinet,” said Evans.
Evans’s love for music sparked his interest in teaching during his intermediate years. “In eighth grade, I had an opportunity to teach beginning flute players. When I watched and saw them make progress to become a better version of themselves…I was hooked. [In that moment] I knew I wanted to be a teacher,” mentioned Evans.
Evans is a phenomenal teacher at FHS with roots that run back to this very school. He can bring many helpful things to the school, not only in science, but also in music. FHS is beyond excited to welcome Evans into the school environment.
