Welcome, Will Jenkins, a new addition to the Fauquier High School (FHS) math department. Jenkins is ready to start his first year teaching Algebra I as well as coaching the new FHS E-sports team.
Growing up around the Fauquier area, Jenkins graduated from FHS in 2019 and studied at Shenandoah University, earning his master’s degree in business. At first, Jenkins didn’t expect himself to be a teacher, but after helping fellow students in college, he found enjoyment in teaching. “I ended up partnering with one of our professors, and helping out there really drove me to want to be a teacher,” Jenkins stated.
Jenkins was attracted to FHS due to his past attendance and two job openings that perfectly fit his expertise: math and gaming.
As an FHS alumni, Jenkins prioritizes practice when teaching his students, “I think repeated practice, whether that be through a game, or through worksheets, is the best way to teach,” he shared
Jenkins is excited to see what his students are capable of and hopes for the Falcon’s football team success. He shared, ”I’m looking forward to seeing some football games.”
Jenkins’ favorite way of teaching is through games, “I think games get students the most engaged…but every now and then you gotta be the evil guy and give out a worksheet,” he said.
As a new E-sports coach, Jenkins coaches students to play the competitive side of games such as “Rocket League,” “Super Smash Bros.,” “League of Legends” and “Mario Kart: World.” One of Jenkins’ favorite games is “The Witcher III.” In his free time, he plays “Magic: The Gathering,” a card game, with his friends. “I play a lot of Magic: The Gathering. I go play with some friends around the area,” commented Jenkins. When not teaching or putting time into his games, with his friends or family, Jenkins likes to attend concerts, featuring his favorite genres of music: punk rock and rap.
In addition to coming back to FHS and assuming a role of the teacher, Jenkins is eager to see what his students can accomplish, saying, “I’m really excited to see what these students can do with the opportunities that they’re given.” He is excited to overcome any challenges that may reveal themselves later on in the year. Jenkins will be an amazing new addition to FHS.
