Fauquier High School (FHS) student, senior Cynthia Salazar, is bringing a fun twist to mainstream fashion. Taking on her senior year with style, Salazar balances running the FHS Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) and her rigorous classes, all while maintaining a fashionable appearance every day.
Salazar first became interested in fashion this summer. “I think this past summer is when I really started trying…probably because of TikTok … and because I’m trying to look like a senior.” While Salazar notes that her style can be “all over the place,” FHS students can often find her in baggy jeans and UGG boots.
The biggest inspirational figure for Salazar’s style is Dimitra Diaz. Diaz is one of several TikTok creators who popularized the “Clean Girl” aesthetic, and Salazar has adopted the growing trend. Thanks to these TikTok creators, the “Clean Girl” look has now become a staple in the closets of American teens. The style focuses on neutral colors, simple silhouettes, understated jewelry and a natural “no-makeup” makeup look. Hair is often tied back and slicked down, which Salazar wholeheartedly approves of. “I feel like a lot of people wear their hair down nowadays. I like a slick back or [an updo or] something more creative.”
For all students looking to spice up their fall wardrobe, Salazar encourages those with similar tastes to check out brands such as Brandy Melville and Hollister, and to visit the virtual second-hand store, Depop. Salazar is also a massive fan of baggy jeans. “I love [them],” she exclaimed.
Salazar’s biggest fashion secret is the sandwich method. The method describes an outfit with a matching top and bottom element, and the middle piece, such as a belt or pants, is a contrasting color or pattern. The result is a cohesive and polished look suitable for any occasion.
Even though Salazar is finishing her last year at FHS, she continues to evolve and refine her fashion sense, and she hopes others will too.
