FHS is home to a wide variety of clubs. From DECA to FFA, FHS has many options for students of almost all niches. Together We Serve, a new addition to FHS, is going to be joining FHS’ expanding list of clubs. Darell Sirignano, an English and film teacher at FHS and president of Together We Serve, junior Sydney Beachboard, started the new club with the hope that many students will join the club to help better our community.
Together We Serve is built off of bettering our community, whether that be helping the homeless, the LGBTQ community or even senior citizens who need somebody to talk to. The club started with the idea that the community needs to be better and we can’t just sit around and do nothing about it. “The community needs help, we need to do something about it because we live here and we see what’s going on every single day. We want to help [people in need] reach their potential and find what they want to do,” said Beachboard.
Together We Serve has already held one meeting where they discussed scheduling for club meetings, but the club is still in need of more members. For future meetings, they plan to discuss what they can do to help the community. The club members will talk about what events they could hold, how they can help and what people will need. “[Along with the homeless drive] we will have a clothing drive and a supplies drive where we can give people household necessities, like toilet paper, shampoo, body wash and all of that. We will also go to the senior centers where we will talk to the seniors and they could give somebody advice, tell stories, talk about their grandkids,” Beachboard said. These are just some of the activities that Together We Serve plans to participate in.
One may wonder how joining the club benefits them. Beachboard stated, “We will provide kids with something that will look good for college, but also make sure people in the community know that their voices are heard.” The club also helps with getting volunteer hours if students are members of organizations like the NHS.
The club originally started as GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) but quickly grew to what it is today. “GSA is mostly just trying to focus on the LGBTQ community, but now we want to help the entire community and help those that aren’t really interested in GSA,” stated Beachboard.
An amazing new club dedicated to helping the community, Together We Serve will be a fantastic option for FHS students to join.
