Mindy McGinnis has written and published 13 books. One of her books called “A Madness So Discreet” won the “Edgar Award for Best Young Adult” in 2016. On Oct. 16th, she visited FHS. She had two sessions, one during 3rd block and one during 4th block, for anyone to come and listen to her talk about her books.
During the session, McGinnis talked about her books individually and explained the back stories for them. She also answered questions that the students had related to the publishing process, how she gets her ideas and so much more. Students had a great time and enjoyed listening to her talk about her books, how they were made, more about her life and how she became a writer. At the end of each of her sessions, she gave everyone the opportunity to buy one or more of her books and signed each one.
McGinnis is the first published author to discuss her books in this way to FHS. There have been some other authors in the past, but she is the first one to ever come into the building and talk to the students and staff. McGinnis talks about how growing up she only read clean books with happy endings. She thought that those things were boring; during her freshman year in college, she discovered books that weren’t clean and had a lot of horrific content. McGinnis was shocked people could write books like that, and that’s how she started writing her books. Students and staff that were there during her session thank her and hope she enjoyed her time here at FHS.
