A hidden gem back in the counseling office is Fauquier High School’s (FHS) very own registrar, Elizabeth Verna. A registrar is in charge of enrolling all the new students and transferring out students who leave or go to another school. The registrar also gets all the diplomas ready for the seniors. Additionally, the job maintains the responsibility of doing the report running and data entry for Uptown and the teachers. Verna likes that there is a “variety of things, so it’s [never] boring.”
A fun fact about Verna is that she grew up in the town of Warrenton, VA and graduated from FHS. Verna was also on the Falconer staff and was an advertising director for it. After graduating from FHS, Verna went to Christopher Newport University and majored in political science, and then worked for a little bit in Washington, DC.
Verna has been working at FHS for two years. Her first year had “a lot of on-the-job training… [Verna] just jumped [right in] and had to learn as I [went]…everybody was really welcoming and supportive.” Although being a registrar comes with it’s challenges, Verna alays has a helping hand in the work community in a time of need.
Verna’s favorite part about working in a high school and as a registrar is “getting to be back in high school…I’m also one of the assistant cross country and track coaches…So that’s kind of the best perk of the job.” Another one of the perks is that Verna is on the same schedule as her kids, so she gets weekends and has the same holidays as them.
Before coming to FHS, Verna had a small business with a close friend, “doing event planning and working with a friend who’s a private chef.” They did a lot of fundraising and small weddings. After college, Verna was also a consultant for Grant Thornton LLP.
Outside of Verna’s professional job, she has a wide variety of hobbies including reading and making flower arrangements, and every once in a while, Verna will jump in with the friend and event plan. Verna also loves to run; Verna ran cross country in college.
Verna has four children, so a lot of Verna’s time is taken up by the kids’ sports games. “A lot of my outside time when I’m not [at FHS or] coaching is driving the other kids to…sporting events…” One of her four children, Natalie Verna, is a sophomore here at FHS.
Natalie Verna finds comfort in having her mom in the building for a variety of reasons, “I went to private school for elementary and middle school, so having [Elizabeth Verna] in the building made it an easier transition,” stated Natalie Verna. Like her mom, Natalie Verna also runs track, so having her mom assisting in coaching is wonderful because Natalie Verna always has a ride, and have the same afternoon schedule.
Verna is a very determined educator, having lots of responsibilities with her job as a registrar, assisting in coaching the track team and making time for kids and personal life. Verna is very dedicated to her work and is, overall, a very hard-working individual. Verna is an excellent member of the FHS staff. All these things makes Verna a strong person and her wonderful personality is perfect for Fauquier High School.
