Students who are 15 years of age need to obtain a work permit, known as the employment certificate, and must have a firm offer of employment in order to apply for a permit. To register online, students should visit the Virginia Electronic Employment Certificate System (VAeECS) to get a unique identification number. The VAeECS is divided into three sections, with one being Youth Registration, the other Employer Registration and the last Parent/Guardian/Custodian Registration. The unique ID is then given to the employer and parent so they can each log in to complete the “Intent to employ”(done by the employer) and “Permission to Employ”(done by the guardian). Once all these requirements are met, the Department of Labor should review and issue the certificate electronically within 24 hours.
