As the holiday season approaches, students at Fauquier High School (FHS) embrace the latest holiday trends. Recently, several festive trends have become popular on every corner of social media. These trends include Old Money Christmas aesthetics, oversized red satin bows, muted metallics and many more.
Christmas is one of the most well-known holidays and is known for the traditional Christmas tree, decorated with garlands and ornaments. A well-known decorating trend for trees is handmade bows; however, they are not the only popular decoration this year. Warmer, small lights wrapped around trees are unique to elevate the Christmas aesthetic, too. These simple decorations have grown in popularity because of the simple yet elegant nostalgic look they provide. Bows are not the only popularized handmade decorations in style this year. Small trinkets, such as handmade and handblown glass ornaments, are frequently seen. Some households even decorate multiple smaller trees instead of a single large one. This provides a sense of community by scattering these smaller decorations throughout the house.
One of the most popular trends this holiday season is the Old Money aesthetic. The Old Money aesthetic consists of timeless fashion and decor, including deeper colors, and brands such as Ralph Lauren, Paul Smith, and L.L. Bean. Must-haves for this trend are colors such as deep red, forest green and navy blue. Some of the patterns that these colors are frequently seen in are plaids and polka dots. For those who enjoy decorating Christmas trees in line with seasonal trends, warm white lights are highly recommended for this aesthetic. Some popular ornaments this season include gold- or brass-colored ornaments and understated, metallic-but-not-shiny pieces.
Another popular Christmas aesthetic this year is an Alpine Lodge theme. The Alpine Lodge aesthetic typically contains warm, cozy and woody tones – those primarily noticed in a rustic cabin. Some of these colors are different shades of warm and cool brown, cream white, and deeper hues. The rich tones of deep greens and blues tie nicely with the timeless aesthetic. While these two themes seem very similar, they actually differ in many ways. The Alpine Lodge theme mainly consists of warm, neutral tones, giving off a cozy vibe, whilst the Old Money theme gives off a more dignified feel across all the decorations.
While many trends have been popularized, a few have fallen out of style. Some of these trends that have fallen out are overly lavish decorations, such as mass-produced items, tacky ornaments, and large, bold decorations. These have mostly fallen out because they lack character, and there isn’t much variability with decorations. These decorations tend to leave out the true personality and uniqueness of holiday decorations. The harsh, loud colors have also fallen out of style because modern trends often sway towards more neutral and coordinated colors. Following the example of “simple and effortless” decorating helps create a more harmonious tone for styling.
Winter is one of the coziest seasons, and with these holiday trends, many can make this holiday season their best yet. No matter the trends and traditions, the newest trend is to give one’s home personality and character in ways that set it apart from others. It’s trendy to be unique and to experiment with different decor around the house, and this is the year to do that.
