On Tuesday, Oct. 28, the National Honor Society (NHS) inducted new members into the program. There was a wonderful ceremony where the parents of the inductees got to watch as their children got inducted into the NHS. Fauquier High School (FHS) Principal Dr. David Ferguson delivered a speech to the inductees and parents there. English teacher Cathleen Beachboard, the sponsor of NHS spoke as well.
Each of the NHS officers got to talk a little about the four pillars of the NHS.Each of the pillars represents a characteristic about the NHS and what the students should strive for, when it comes to being in the program. The four pillars of the NHS are Scholarship, Service, Leadership and Character. After the officers spoke about the four pillars of the NHS, the induction ceremony began.
During the induction process the students go up on stage by last name order starting with A and ending in Z. Students go on the stage and receive a NHS pin, then they go over to retrieve a lit candle and stand on the stage until everyone is there, eventually reciting the NHS pledge. Then the inductees are officially a part of the NHS.
One of the officers, senior Ariel Payton, is the secretary for the NHS. Payton states, “[the officers] look for students who take good course rigor and are involved with the community at FHS.” At the ceremony Payton spoke about the Scholarship pillar which focuses on academic study and achievement. Payton also helped light the candles during the ceremony, which symbolically represented the flame of the NHS being awakened in each inductee.
NHS president Ngebewung Irene Awunganyi, a senior, thought that the ceremony went really well. Though not everything was perfect, there were some problems with timing but everything else went according to plan. As stated by Awunganyi “It went well we inducted [the inductees] and then [the inductees] did the pledge,” Awunganyi continued, “It was really nice, everyone was very friendly.”
The ceremony went wonderfully, leaving everyone pleased with how it went. With the inductees feeling really proud to be there and to be accepted into this wonderful program. The NHS graciously welcomes the new members with open arms.
