As Halloween is approaching, so is the spooky time of the year when everyone dresses up. From traditional to more unique outfits, students at Fauquier High School (FHS) have their plans in place. As we embark on the year 2025-2026, new movies, shows, and celebrities are popping up left and right, providing great inspiration for costumes.
Social media and pop culture play a large role in what tends to be sought after for Halloween costumes. Social media provides an outlet for others to share ideas. Junior Isabella Smith stated, “On TikTok, there’s a lot of inspiration for what to do for costumes.” Because Halloween costumes are mainly based on trendy memes, movie characters and celebrities, costumes that are once deemed unique often disappear. Freshman William Johnston added, “Whatever is viral and popular at the moment is what people are more likely to
to dress up as.”
Although some might take the route of wearing a more trendy Halloween costume this year, others have different plans. Junior Hank Hethcote is taking the more unique side of Halloween. He is dressing up as Beast Boy, alongside his girlfriend, Junior, Simona Suarez, as Raven, both from “Teen Titans.” Hethcote believes his costume is more distinctive than others this year. “I think it’s more unique because Teen Titans is more of a nostalgic thing now than something that’s as culturally relevant,” Hethcote commented.
Senior Kayana Frisk, on the other hand, believes her Halloween costume is more on the popular side. Frisk is either going as Hiccup or Toothless, both from the new live-action movie “How to Train Your Dragon.” Even though this movie came out in June, it has still influenced Halloween costumes for this year. “I think it’s popular since that movie just came out,” Frisk mentioned. However, Frisk’s costume stands away from others due to her personal creativity and originality. “For Toothless, I’d make it out of cardboard, [then for] Hiccup I’d also make it out of cardboard and fabric,” Frisk added.
Since FHS students are usually pretty active with social media, many saw a trend with Halloween costumes this year. Hethcote states, “I’ve seen the 2025 costumes and it’s just the colors of a character.” With Smith seeing a lot of other things, “Princesses and Monster High because corsets are really popular.” Many have different opinions on what exactly the trendy Halloween costumes for 2025 are, but everyone plans to express themselves with their costume in their own personal way.
