“The Book of Bill” is the third season that “Gravity Falls” fans have been waiting for. The fanbase returns after years of living in the dark. The series began showing during night hours, and “Gravity Falls” had been forgotten by most. Finally, author Alex Hirsch released his own creation, “Bill Cipher,” after eight years of fans believing he was gone for good, into a book.
Gravity Falls is a town of unknown species, traditions and mysteries. The author of the journal, Stanford Pines researches the town of Gravity Falls and its conspiracies along with the secrets the town holds. The journals consist of three books dedicated to his detailed research and findings, with Bill Cipher, one of Gravity Falls’ nefarious villains, being one of them. “The Book of Bill” is simply Bill’s perspective, another version of Stanford’s work, or is it more than what it seems?
Gravity Falls first aired in 2012. When the overall love for the show started fading away, of course, the “Book of Bill” came out, and the fanbase arose. The show was remarkable for its time. From the main protagonist discovering the journal to the end of Weirdmaggedon, Gravity Falls left fans wanting more.
The book goes into the backstory of Bill along with his relationships with the other characters, specifically Stanford Pines. It begins with Stanford’s entry about how he believes Bill Cipher is still alive, how the readers shouldn’t summon him, how the “Book of Bill” mysteriously showed up, again and again, no matter how many times he’s tried to destroy it, and how the book seems to infect other books. By the end of the entry, Stanford warns the reader, “DO NOT TURN ITS PAGES, DO NOT WRITE YOUR NAME, DO NOT BELIEVE A WORD.” Each page is dedicated to the nefarious villain himself to continue the show’s conclusion. Thus begins 224 pages of pure chaos. The book shines a light mainly on Bill Cipher, but on the sidelines lies Stanford Pines. A character who showed a regretful interest in Bill Cipher, which is described at the beginning of the book.
Barnes & Noble displayed the book with other novels around it, and there seemed to be this black substance on the cover of the book. When opening the other books, there’s nothing but ‘HAHAHAHA’ on each page, depicting the idea of Bill ‘infecting’ other books with his presence. Of course, not all Barnes & Noble bookstores have this display, but even so, the book became a top seller by the end of July and early August of this year, showing off how dedicated the fans were.
The book, a ‘behind the scenes’ of Alex Hirsch’s most famous villains, brings back the dead fanbase that was left behind. The weirdness Bill Cipher brings to the table in “The Book of Bill” has overthrown the word ‘weird’ itself. “The Book of Bill” not only goes into depth about Bill’s chaotic backstory, which was not only interesting but still raised more questions about the character he is. Page after page is full of blood-curdling messages and content defining more of Bill Cipher than known. This book is the perfect gift to the fans giving fans who have been waiting eight years for another installment of Gravity Falls.
The contents of the book are just as insane as the character it revolves around. Whether it’s the creepy rituals, the hidden messages, or just the overall content, The Book of Bill was erratic with all the twists and turns.
