“Upgraded” is a new movie that was recently released in February. It involves the three L’s: lying, love and lust. Impersonating your boss is one thing, but going as far as almost destroying her career is another. Some might say the movie’s events were justified because love was involved, but others may say its protagonist, Ana Santos, was being selfish.
Ana Santos is a young, impressionable girl living in New York City with her sister, because she doesn’t have a house of her own. She has just been promoted, and is on her way to London for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. When a few hiccups on her way to London land her on a different flight than her boss, Ana must make the most of it. Luckily for her, she was upgraded to first class. Meeting a handsome young man, William Laroche, was just one of the many interesting things to happen on her trip to London. William is a young gentleman with a British accent who could woo anyone, including Ana.
Starting to live her “Hannah Montana” life, Ana pretends to be someone she isn’t around William and continues to be her real self around Claire DuPont, Ana’s boss. Impersonating should get her fired, but it boosts her career in the best way possible. Ana Santos learns to bend the rules and get her way and use her connections to work her way from a penniless intern at her dream job to owning her gallery and working for herself.
It was surprising that, after everything she did, she didn’t get fired and kicked out of her company. She was forgiven for everything that she did very easily because she had friends in power. If she was still the person she was at the beginning of the movie she would have never been forgiven so easily. She did grow as a person and showed how she could climb the power chain and get her way to the top, but she used other people to do it. This movie was expected to end with a big bang, but it disappointed many fans by flat-lining. For such an interesting movie, the ending was quite a disappointment. In the end, everything was resolved, but it left viewers unsatisfied.
Despite the filmmaker’s intentions, Ana didn’t have great character development because she didn’t do anything herself; she used other people to get what she wanted. However, the cinematography is great, taking place in London and showing its famous sites, but the characters in the movie are annoying and unrealistic. Despite the film’s shortcomings, it combines rule-breaking and romance into a package that ultimately works. It’s a new movie and is something fresh and spunky for viewers.
