The girls’ track and field team punched their tickets to states this winter season after winning first place at the Region 4C Indoor Track Championships. Coach Quinton Jones says he is very proud of the girls this year. “This season was tough dealing with COVID and our restrictions. It was really hard to get to know the kids this year and to really have them experience a typical season,” said Jones.
Jones said that with the COVID-19 guidelines, “athletes had to wear their masks at all times except when they were competing.” They were reminded of social distance while at the track and before coming to practices or meets, the athletes were required to fill out the self assessment form and take their temperature.
States will be held on March 1st at Liberty University. Alyssa Robson, junior and long jump, triple jump, hurdles and sprint racer, says she trains four days a week and lifts the other three days. “There is about 2 weeks until states, so I plan on continuing my lifts and practicing before then,” she said.
Julia Crowther, freshman and sprint runner, said that it felt “captivating to be presented the Region 4C trophy.” Last season, the girls’ excelled in their postseason, winning second place in the state meet. Robson says, “To compete again feels so amazing. Having sports taken away so quickly was hard, but it made me and so many others realize to seize the moment.” She says that “if you have an opportunity, take it because you never know when you will have another one.”
