A small team with a big heart. That’s what the tennis team at Fauquier High School (FHS) is all about. Winning and having a league team isn’t something on the forefront of the minds of the players, instead it’s having fun, exercising and being outside with people they enjoy.
The coach this year is one of the librarians at FHS and recreational tennis player, Kathryn Davis. Going into the season Davis says “We’re not focusing on the wins and losses, we’re focusing on how well we play our game and that’s really all that matters.”
Sophomore Lucy Finkbeiner on the team for the second year in a row. What keeps her coming back is the team saying “…We are all super close and nice to each other and it doesn’t have drama.” With coach Davis at the helm this year the intensity has been turned up but in a good way. “It’s high intensity, more running and conditioning,” Finkbeiner commented. “[but] I think we are going to be better than last year.”
Junior Renato Marecos is on the boys team coached by Ben Dronsick. Marecos says “I love playing [tennis].” It’s an enjoyable way to get outside and exercise which is one of the reasons Marecos started playing. “[The coach] is very nice … it’s not that serious … [and] it’s a good way to exercise.”
Overall, the tennis team is combining fun, exercises, time with friends and giving it all you got out on the court. Sometimes the best sports are the ones not focused on the wins but the enjoyment that comes from playing.
