Participating in school sports is very common among high school students and is often seen as an important part of being active in school. When spring sports tryouts start, it brings in old and new players to the teams. Tryouts can be nerve-racking, yet the athletes are ready and excited for the new season and teammates. The support athletes receive when they start a new sport is so important because it lays the foundation for their athletic experience.
Lacrosse at Fauquier High School (FHS) is a popular sport with consistently large crowds of family and friends at the games. This popularity brings new people to tryouts every year. Friendship is one of the most enjoyable parts of being on a team.
As sophomore Addison Long stated, “We’re all so supportive [of each other],” further showing how the team encourages and helps each other. The boys' lacrosse team shares the same effort of teamwork and competitiveness.
During tryout season, girls’ soccer team is focused on determination and team work. Since soccer is such a teammate dependent sport, the team has to be filled with players who are determined and fast thinking. Freshman Teaghan Zelasko stated the best advice she had was to “Keep doing it, and keep trying.” Consistency always pays off when you're playing a sport.
Tennis is a sport that heavily relies on mental strength. Junior Nathan Gibbs stated that tennis is, “Really good if you want a boost of confidence and to try something new.” Confidence in yourself is so important in sports, especially tennis. Although track is mainly dependent on individual results having a good team to help you through the constant practices and competitions. Senior Joel Williams advised new players, "Don't be afraid to make mistakes, just try your best.” In a sport like track, trying your hardest only rewards you with better results.
Trying out for spring sports is an exciting way for students to challenge themselves and put themselves out there more. Collectively, the FHS sports teams not only focus on hard work but also on communication and trust. The skills shown during tryouts set the tone for the new season, which is why you always try your best and encourage others.
