The Future Farmers of America, or FFA, is one of the many clubs and organizations that are at FHS. This club meets together every second and fourth Tuesday of the month. Some students tend to think that FFA is only for those that want to be farmers when they are older, but FFA’s reporter, Taylor Parker, disagrees with this. “Personally,” Parker said, “ I want to be a wildlife biologist, which is kind of agricultural, but it’s not necessarily about farming.” Parker states that FFA members do various things in their meetings, such as playing team-building games, eating snacks together and going over an agenda to make sure everything is running smoothly.

According to Parker, one of the things they do in meetings is prepare with their team for competitions that have many different categories, and as FFA members they get to choose which events or categories they would like to participate in. These categories include floral design, ag marketing, hippology (the study of horses), horse judging, and log rolling. Parker continued by explaining the overall layout of the competitions by saying, “In competitions you have an exam test and then you can work with the rest of your team on different problems together.”

During the FFA’s meetings, the teams gather together to study for the written exams using study materials like Quizlet flashcards and by watching videos of the categories they are participating in from previous years in order to be better prepared. For anyone interested in learning more about FFA, go to room 803 in the annex and talk to Susan Hilleary, who is the teacher sponsor of the club.
