Alexander Stewart’s latest single “broken by you” from his album, “if you only knew” very quickly has gained the approval of fans and critics alike. Recently, Stewart announced his “bleeding hearts tour” for the album. In “broken by you,” Stewart tells a heart-wrenching story about how even though in the end he lost the person he loved, he would do it again to have a glimpse of all the good times they felt before the person ended up leaving. In the song, Stewart says, “And my heart’s gonna break, then at least I can say I was broken by you,” showing how much he doesn’t want the memory of the other person to leave. The lyric “Leave your ghost, I’ll let you haunt me” further emphasizes this message.
Just like the rest of the songs Stewart has written, there is so much emotion that he manages to show with absolutely every word. With the very exposed singing and lyrics, and beautiful instruments, such as piano and guitar, as well as numerous percussion instruments in the back, it brings that much more depth to the song. He tells the story of his heartbreak, while only sharing a small portion of the actual story. While this song is very similar to most of the other songs he has written, such as “drunk thought” or “october,” it still is very unique in tempo and various dynamics. The ups and downs of volume in numerous crescendos and strong notes that are held for a long time give the song life beyond the story that is already being told. “broken by you” is a musical masterpiece by Stewart and rightfully one of the best songs to listen to right now.
