Play Boi Carti released a new album initially titled “I AM MUSIC,” but it was changed to “Music.” He released the album on March 14, 2025. A negative aspect of the album is that it took so long to release. Cartis’s most recent album before this was released in 2020, “Whole Lotta Red,” which marked a five-year gap between that album and this most recent album. The release of a new album was teased so much that it became a joke to much of Carti’s fanbase and was not taken seriously. With the album taking so long to be released, many fans were incredibly eager to see if this new album was worth the wait. “Music” features 30 tracks and includes a mix of guest appearances and artists in the songs, such as Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, The Weeknd, Skepta, Future, Lil Uzi Vert, Ty Dolla Sign and Young Thug. This album features a mix of unique tracks and Carti’s special music style.
Many of Carti’s previous songs and albums contain a unique sound and use of mixing beats, but many of the songs released in the “Music” album are too jarring and a disturbing mix of unflowing beats and screaming. Songs like “Cocaine Nose” contain Cartis’s usual unique energy, but the rushed beats and scrambling noises are unpleasant and it’s almost impossible to distinguish the lyrics and actual music coming from the song. The mixes seem to be all over the place and have much potential if they were created with more time. Other songs felt rushed, such as “Crank” and “Popout.”
An additional problem with “Music” is its lack of depth. Carti’s new song, “Walk,” lacks the beats that many of his other songs contain, and it feels like it’s missing the added creativity and depth. While Carti’s songs are known to contain chaotic energy, many songs in this album pushed the boundaries in his genre of music and made some of the music almost impossible to listen to.
Many of the songs on Cartis’ new album don’t contain much translatable language, and it is difficult to understand what he is saying. Some songs feel demonic, with lots of screaming random noises and words. It seemed as if they contained more screaming than actual singing and rapping. While most rap can be chaotic-sounding, there’s still a standard for what is catchy and good to listen to, and some of the songs on this album do not reach that bar.
Given how long it took for “Music” to be released, it would seem that his songs would be cleaner and have fewer random beats. However, the album felt uninspiring, and it seems as if the album was released in a rush due to immense financial and social pressure from his fans.
