The Fauquier Field Hockey Team warms up before their game at Brenstville High School.

Now that we are midway through the fall sports season, the Fauquier Field Hockey Team has brought home an impressive sweep at Brentsville High School. Both the JV and varsity teams left Brentsville with the scoreboard showing 4-0 (JV) and 7-0 (varsity). Impressive enough as it is, the Field Hockey Team has come a long way since the beginning of the season.

In an athletic setting, you have to communicate with your teammates out of the best interest of the team if you expect results. Sophomore Cara Rooke, a forward on the JV Field Hockey Team, expresses her love for field hockey, as well as the dynamic of her team. “This season so far has been great, and I love playing with this team,” Rooke says, “we all have great chemistry and it’s so much fun,” said Rooke. Within the first 30 seconds of the JV game, Rooke took an impressive shot. “When I score, it’s so exciting. The feeling exhilarates me. When the team cheers it is so much fun, especially even more exciting when my teammates score as well.” said Rooke.

Most of the players on varsity have come full circle from being a part of Fauquier’s Field Hockey team. Senior Lindsey Cree has had her name on the roster since her freshman year at Fauquier. Cree and her teammates pump each other up before the start of each game to get everyone in the zone. “Our pre-game ritual is to always hit the goal with our stick when we run our lap, but only when we have a home game,” said Cree. This very specific tradition is something the Field Hockey Lady Falcons never fail to include in their pre-game ritual.

Aside from the nail-biting plays, as well as the organic chemistry of the two teams, the captains make sure to take some stress off the players and organize team bonding activities. Kenzie Settle is in grade eight at Taylor Middle School whose talent has allowed her to be a part of Fauquier High School’s athletics. It may be very intimidating to join a team with people who are older than you, so the captains arranged for a team bonding activity to break the ice. “In the beginning of the season we did a big pool party to get to know each other better,” said Settle, “It was really fun and was one of my favorite memories of this season so far.”
