Laufey is back at it again with a brand new cinematic album. “A Matter of Time,” released on Aug. 22, 2025, is Laufey’s third studio album. Her first album, “Everything I Know About Love,” was released in 2022, followed by “Bewitched” in 2023. “A Matter of Time” features four singles: “Silver Lining,” “Tough Luck,” “Lover Girl” and “Snow White.” She expresses a lot of emotion in her music, especially on this album. What makes Laufey’s new album so different from her other two is the dreamy fantasy feel of the songs. Her voice and music are truly unique, unlike those of any other singer of this time.
One of the first couple of songs on this album, also one of Laufey’s singles, “Snow White,” discusses the beauty standards of women today. Laufey tends to struggle a lot with her self-image, and this song expresses her emotions in relation to that struggle. The lyrics “The people want beauty, skinny, always wins,” reference the beauty standard that she feels like she doesn’t reach. Laufey stated in an interview with Deezer, “I felt like…I didn’t look the part for being the singer.” This song holds great significance to Laufey, with some lyrics being her personal favorite. “A woman’s best currency is her body, not her brain,” which defines how a woman’s word is often overlooked in comparison to her appearance.
One of the later songs on the album, “Forget-Me-Not,” is a very sentimental message to her home country. Laufey was born and grew up in Reykjavík, Iceland, and she came to America to start her musical journey. Her culture plays an important role not only in her life but also in her music. Since Iceland holds lots of things meaningful to her, this song talks about how she doesn’t want the people there to forget her. The Icelandic lyrics, “Gleymdu mér aldrei þó ég héðan flýg, Gleymdu mér aldrei, elskan mín,” translate to, “Never forget me even if I fly away, never forget me, my love.” “Forget-Me-Not” is almost a love letter to the people of her home country.
Laufey’s last track on this album is a song titled “Sabotage.” This song isn’t quite about being sabotaged by another, but more so by herself. Laufey mentions, “I’m my worst enemy,” referencing self-sabotage with a situation in her life. “Sabotage” not only has purposeful lyrics, but also intense instrumental parts. It builds the tension and displays a chaotic vibe to the song. Almost signifying Laufey is starting to be damaged by her own self-destruction. This song is a perfect way to wrap up “A Matter of Time” by mentioning the title of the album, “It’s just a matter of time ’til you see the dagger.”
“A Matter of Time” by Laufey is a well-crafted album overall. It expresses Laufey and who she is as a person in her own unique way. With breathtaking lyrics, vocals and instrumentals, all telling a different outstanding story. This album is definitely worth listening to, especially if listeners are in for a roller coaster of emotions.
