“Nimona” is a well-made, comedic and heart-touching movie about a shape-shifting outcast named Nimona who resents the ways of the kingdom in which she lives. This movie is based on the graphic novel version of her story that was written by ND Stevenson. In the movie, Nimona is the sidekick of Ballister, who is known to be a “monster” and an outcast in their society. Former knight Ballister was accused and framed for murdering the kingdom’s queen which led to Nimona going on an adventure to find him and to help prove his innocence. A prominent theme explored in this movie is how anything that society sees as different should be destroyed. It also shows how people’s perspectives can be easily persuaded and controlled by the government.
Originally “Nimona” was supposed to be released in February 2020 by Disney, but due to the pandemic and Disney’s discomfort with the LGBT content, it ended up being canceled in February 2021. Despite “Nimona” being canceled, it ended up being released by Netflix in June 2023. The cancellation mostly impacted the movie’s animation because the way they went back to the original animation and worked on it made it nostalgic to fans who have been waiting for its arrival since Feb 2020.
“Nimona” is a great movie to watch because it captures people’s hearts and attention through the art and storyline, specifically in scenes that expose the truth about the institution. The cast who voiced “Nimona” also did an excellent job of expressing the character’s personas. One actor that stood out was the voice of Nimona, Chloë Grace Moretz. Moretz did an amazing job voicing Nimona and showing the character’s chaotic personality as if she were the actual character. The best part about the movie is that it’s both comedic and nostalgic. Even though the film had its struggles on its way to release, it still became a very successful movie and captured the hearts and minds of its audience.
