Ed and Lorraine Warren are back to take on one final mystery — a case so haunting that it will be their last. “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” released on Sept. 5, 2025, is the final movie in “The Conjuring” franchise. The first movie, “The Conjuring,” was released in 2013, followed by the other three “Conjuring” films. All four “Conjuring” movies follow the story of Ed and Lorraine Warren as they investigate cases involving families with haunted or possessed houses, objects, and even people.
Ed and Lorraine Warren were a real married couple who investigated these mystic cases, tracing back even to the 1950s. Unfortunately, their investigations had to come to an end when Ed passed away in 2006 due to a stroke after suffering heart issues for years prior. “The Conjuring: Last Rites” was a well-anticipated movie by many fans for a final goodbye from the Warrens and their stories.
“The Conjuring: Last Rites,” set in 1986, presents Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) assisting the Smurl Family in Pennsylvania with a possessed object and later a haunting in their home. Unlike the previous films, the new release, “Last Rites,” delves deeper into the backstory of the Warrens and revolves significantly around their daughter. Judy Warren (Mia Tomlinson), now an adult in the movie, faces the struggles of the powers passed down from her mother, which involve interacting with and connecting to spirits. This film conveys a great connection within the Warren family and the people they’ve helped along the way. The “Last Rites” was a perfectly crafted, ominous and eerie story, beautifully brought to life by the actors.
The chemistry between the cast in “The Conjuring: Last Rites” was truly unique. Since Wilson and Farmiga have worked together in the past on previous projects, including “The Conjuring” franchise, their relationship has already been established. Over the years, with each movie Wilson and Farmiga have done, their chemistry with one another has become more like second nature. Thay can bring an inspiring relationship to life both on and off the screen. The duo also did an outstanding job welcoming their new co-star, Mia Tomlinson. Tomlinson, being new to “The Conjuring” franchise, portrayed the adult version of Judy Warren flawlessly.
With the audience having mixed reactions, this movie scored slightly lower than the previous Conjuring movies. Some say it wasn’t as scary as the films that came before and had a slower pace. At the same time, others enjoyed the closure of the Warrens’ story and its emotional components.
“The Conjuring: Last Rites” perfectly captures a spine-chilling experience. Some are upset that Ed and Lorraine’s story is finally coming to an end, but they are also touched by the lasting impact it has had on the fandom. From the story told to the terrifying jump scares, this film is unlike any other and is something that everyone should experience.
