“Sinners” is a new horror movie released on April 18, 2025. The film “Sinners” showcases the struggle for cultural survival, resistance against systemic exploitation and racism within the black community. The movie’s plot also explores black identity, cultural resistance and the false promises of freedom and protection.
The main characters of “Sinners” are twins, Stack and Smoke, who were both played by Michael B. Jordan. A vampire and Stack’s ex-girlfriend, Mary, was played by Hailee Steinfeld. Smoke’s estranged wife, and a Hoodoo practitioner, Annie, was played by Wunmi Mosaku. Lastly, vampire Remmick was portrayed by Jack O’Connell. All actors played their roles very well, and their performances were breathtaking, given the amount of action and fighting between human and non-human characters.
Personally, Michael B. Jordan is a fan favorite; he truly outdid himself delivering two of the best performances in his dual roles. It was surprising and mind-blowing how well he did in dual roles; not all actors can do what he can.
Director Ryan Coogler introduced Stack and Smoke as identical twin brothers who just returned to Mississippi from World War 1 to open a juke joint. That is where characters like Sammie Moore, Annie, Delta Slim, Cornbread, Grace and Bo Chow and Pearline appear in the movie in order to help Stack and Smoke start the business.
At first, the movie appeared to be a historical drama set in the past, during or after the era of slavery around 1932, with a focus on personal stories from that time. For example, a personal story from director Ryan Coogler’s own life was the influence of his uncle James, his maternal grandfather and the impact of his uncle’s death. Personal experiences of the actors like Mosaku exploring her own family history and Steinfeld learning about her mixed-race family’s past. However, the direction quickly evolved as new scenes were added and new characters appeared. The dynamic between the father, pastor Jedidiah Moore, played by Saul Williams, and son, Sammie Moore, played by Miles Caton, especially the son’s rebellion against his father’s rigorous values, added depth and tension. What was really shocking was the unexpected plot twist. The story took a surprising, thrilling turn, becoming something entirely different and keeping viewers engaged.
The shift into fear and horror was a standout feature for most viewers. The transition was unexpected and intense, leaving viewers breathless in the best way. The film featured several emotional scenes that added depth to the story.
Ryan Coogler’s movie “Sinners” is a fantastic masterpiece in the horror genre, blending southern horror with rich historical and cultural textures. The plot of “Sinners” was gripping from beginning to end and perfectly complemented by the excellent musical score and wasn’t much of a mess since all the stories and plots were explained. The “Sinners” soundtrack turned out to fit the film and matched different parts. The unique mix of southern delta and vampires met all of my expectations. It was horrifying, frightening and drew attention. The film delivers outstanding performances and adds depth to the haunting tale.
