The academic team has had a remarkable season this year. One of the highlights was their performance on the game show, “It’s Academic,” which premiered on April 8, 2024.
FHS competed against Paul VI Catholic High School from Chantilly, V.A. and Quince Orchard High School in Gaithersburg, M.D. The three teams squared off as each of the three students from each school answered difficult questions that were asked by the host. The three students who represented FHS were seniors David Achter, Jake Woodside and Charlotte Funkhouser.
The competition consisted of five different rounds. Round One includes eight themed questions and, in Round Two, each team is individually asked five questions and receives 20 points for each correct answer. Round three is a toss-up visual round, and, in Round four, the teams must select from three question packets. Round five has quick toss-up questions. FHS was successful with these challenging questions, placing second in the competition with 405 points. It is a rare opportunity to be on a television show, so it was a unique experience for the team. Woodside said, ¨The environment was very nice and the host was kind, so we got to talk to her a bit. The show was a competitive friendly nature, and it was an experience I will not forget.¨ Everyone else on the team had a great time. This is an annual event that FHS will be competing in next year as well. The team hopes that the following years will go just as well as this last season.
