Fauquier High School (FHS) has an abundance of talented athletes throughout different sports. This is apparent with junior Kayana Frisk, who is on the cross country and winter and spring track teams.
Frisk began playing sports when she was younger, playing softball for a year before moving on to soccer which she played for five years. She didn’t enjoy sports until she began running cross country during the summer of her freshman year. She began because she was interested in joining a sports team, and it seemed the most appealing. Not long after joining cross country, she joined the winter and spring track teams.
Frisk says, “At first it’s hard to get into. The first three [are hard], but once you get used to it it’s really enjoyable and worth it.” Frisk has found much joy through cross country, saying it “lets me put all my energy into doing something that I genuinely love and care about.” Frisk recommends that those looking to join cross country or track should join.
The connection between Frisk and her teammates motivates her as well. She’s been able to meet many of her closest friends through cross country and track. She believes that “running together definitely helps strengthen our friendship because we’ve spent so much time together.”
Frisk’s ability and success are impressive, as she’s made multiple achievements throughout high school. In winter and spring track she made it to states for the 4×8 relay, her team came in second place for spring track and she won an invitational on Oct 19, 2024. The success and joy she finds in track have encouraged her to pursue it as she goes into college. She says, “I want to keep running after high school for as long as possible and I’ll try to run competitively during college.” If not competitively, she says she’ll still run anyway for her own happiness.
The future of the FHS cross country team seems to be bright with new wins under their belt. Meets are hosted semi-weekly, and they’ve been placed for the past couple of meets. Recently, the cross country team went to Winchester, Va. In this meet, they placed first, building high hopes for the future. State regionals are coming up, and of course, the cross country team is hoping to go to states. This is within reach, as students like Frisk make up the FHS cross country and track teams.
