Seneca Scott, junior, is a dedicated winter track athlete at Fauquier High School who has been a part of the program since her freshman year. She decided to join the team after seeking inspiration from her sister, Cassidy Scott, and she has enjoyed the sport ever since.
Scott’s favorite event is the two-mile, which is an eight-lap race around the track. To prepare for the meets, Scott starts with a morning oatmeal and has a peanut butter and jelly sandwich saved for later in the day. Fueling the body with food is important for giving Scott the energy she needs to race. It’s also important for a student to show up during practice and condition.
One of the best parts of being on the FHS track team is the supportive atmosphere. “We all cheer for each other, warm up and cool down together, and even do fun things like matching hairstyles or outfits,” Scott shared. This makes practice and meets more enjoyable even in the coldest months.
Winter track can be a challenge. “It’s actually tough sometimes, I’m not always motivated,” Scott admitted. “You just have to bring lots of layers and blankets,” Scott continued. Although winter track is difficult, Scott stays committed and relies on her teammates to stay strong and keep going. She is encouraged by the support of her peers because the team is all working together on improving themselves.
For Scott, the most challenging part of track running isn’t simply the running, It’s the daily effort of putting in after-school practice, especially in the freezing weather. But all the fun and closeness that she has with her team makes all the hard work worth it. A year-round track athlete such as Scott just proves how much that having passion and determination for a sport can make anyone keep pushing through the toughest seasons.
