The sound of sneakers hitting the waxy gym floor is a sound senior Bailey Payton has become very familiar with. Payton is a starter for the Fauquier High School (FHS) volleyball team. Payton usually plays the position of outside which is also known as left, though when they need her Payton is always happy to play back row.
Payton’s been playing volleyball for about 11 years, first starting in second grade and has been loving it ever since. “I just love the sport and being a part of a team,” she expressed. Payton does not currently play any other sport besides volleyball, though she did play on a travel team in the spring, she is going to be taking a break this year.
Despite her experience, Payton does face some difficulties when playing volleyball. One of the hardest things about being in volleyball is the separation of the physical aspects from the mental ones. “Volleyball is a game of mistakes…It’s a very mental game, just trying to separate the physical aspect from the mental ones…[this] is one of the hardest parts of the game,” Payton conveyed.
Though volleyball is a very difficult sport in both mental and physical aspects, there are some fun things about it, too. “One of my favorite memories is in sophomore year when we made it to the state quarterfinals,” Payton reminisces, “or last season on travel, we got second place at East Coast Championships.”
Unfortunately, Payton is not going to be continuing her volleyball career in college. Though Payton wished that she had gone through the recruiting process, so she could have played in college, Payton has enjoyed her memories with the sport thus far. Nevertheless, Payton believes that it is for the best to take a break from volleyball after this season, “This is my last season of volleyball ever, I usually play travel in the spring, but not this year.” Payton explained.
Payton loves being on the FHS volleyball team saying, “We’re very close on the court and off the court…the dynamic is pretty good.” Payton has been doing really well on the team both in her performance and socially, too. Payton loves being a part of the team and doing her part in getting them to victory.
Payton’s advice to anyone going out for any volleyball team is: “Definitely go in and just be confident… always ask for help, practice hard, play hard and work hard.” Payton’s drive to strive for victory with her team helps push Payton as a person and overall helps with her performance on the court.
Volleyball has proven to be an important aspect of Payton’s life. The lessons she has learned will stay with her forever. Though the sport was a big part of her life, she has different plans for her future. Bailey Payton, as well as the FHS community, is excited to see what she has in store!
