Out of all the very skilled players on the Fauquier High School girls’ volleyball team, Neema Kamunya stands out with her great leadership and talent. Kamunya started playing volleyball in her freshman year and has worked all the way up to captain for her senior year. She hopes to keep the FHS record strong and wants to be there in any way to support her team.
Kamunya explained how this year there are many new and younger girls who have joined the team. She explained her favorite part about the team is “watching everyone grow because you can really see the difference between how we started at the beginning of the season and how we are coming together now.” As captain, Kamunya aims to keep the team’s energy up and stay positive on hard practice and game days. The rest of the team looks up to her and she wants to make sure she is always a good role model for her fellow teammates.
Last year the girls’ volleyball team was 17-8 and that record keeps Kamunya motivated. She says, “Coming off of a great season last year, I want to do it again.” No feeling is better than breaking your own records. There will always be challenges even with the best of teams. Kamunya said that since they are a new team, the feeling this year is different and as the oldest (and as captain), she is trying to lead the younger girls so they can be as successful as last year.
Practices are what build a team’s strengths and strategies. The FHS volleyball team practices usually include their warm-up, defense and hitting drills and always serving drills. Kamunya says that serving “is the one thing you can control in a game.” Practices usually end with a scrimmage or a fun game. On their game days, the girls prepare with a team prayer. They will also listen to music and talk about the goals they have for themselves and for the team. Kamunya is very excited about the season and hopes for another amazing year for the volleyball team.
