The Fauquier field hockey team is coming in hot this year and is ready for the challenges ahead. The team, led by seniors, Addie Gorg, Mckenna Locke, Georgia Grady and junior Kirsten Settle, is coming off a great season last year and is ready to continue their streak. The girls’ current score is 10 in four and they are on the right path to accomplishing their goals.
Freshman Mckenzie Settle says, “I think we have really bonded in the past couple of weeks.” A team’s bond is the most important thing when it comes to being successful as a team. “We use each other a lot on the field instead of just playing as individuals,” says Settle. The girls also bond outside of practices and games. They have done activities like pumpkin patches, team dinners and team runs. Gorg claims, “We are really close, it is like a big family, we all feel like sisters.”
In the past two years, the field hockey team has gone to the state championship and hopes to have the opportunity to participate in the games again. With a successful streak in the past, the girls do not plan to stop now. In fact, this is their prime motivator. Gorg says, “What keeps us motivated is carrying on [the field hockey] legacy.” Currently, the team is tied with Meridian for the district title. There will be a final game between the two to decide the district champion. Gorg says that she has a lot of faith in the team for the upcoming championship.
Even with a rough patch in the middle of the season, the girls used that as motivation to go even harder. Gorg says, “We all came together as a team and have been on a [district] winning streak since then.” Gorg is the speaking captain, which means she has the ability to speak to the referees and call time-outs if she wishes. She adds, “I take that role with great honor and try to be coachable and a leader to the younger girls and be someone they can come to.” Field hockey’s season is looking up, and its leaders and players have high expectations for post-season games.
