Fauquier High School’s (FHS) English as a Second Language program (ESL) is a long running initiative aimed to support students learning English as well as give them the confidence to succeed in their schooling. When students first arrive at FHS speaking little to no English, the ESL program becomes their first bridge into a new language, culture and community.
The goal of the ESL program is to help non-native English speakers at FHS strengthen their reading, writing and speaking skills while still offering the opportunity to participate in regular academic classes.
ESL instructor Leys Rodriguez explained, “[ESL] is a program designed to support students who are learning English … We provide instruction in speaking, reading, writing and listening while helping students participate fully in their classes,” Rodrriguez added, “the program emphasizes accessibility, cultural inclusion and strong relationships with students and families. Our goal is to ensure English Learners feel supported, confident, and prepared to succeed throughout their high school experience.”
Students in the program arrive from a wide range of cultures and ways of life. While the population of ESL is predominantly Spanish speaking, the program boasts its diverse nature that brings with it valuable perspectives to the school community.
“The program emphasizes accessibility, cultural inclusion and strong relationships with students and families. Our goal is to ensure English learners feel supported, confident and prepared to succeed throughout their high school experience.” Said Rodriguez.
ESL groups are intentionally small with a low teacher-to-student ratio to allow teachers to provide individualized support. Even in more focused groups, students still spend their school day in general core and elective classes with non ESL students.
As they progress throughout the program, students discover hidden strengths they didn’t know they had. ESL develops students' interpersonal skills and tests their resilience while simultaneously giving them the confidence they need to succeed in academic and social settings.
“Many students realize they are capable of participating fully in academic and social settings, developing confidence not only in their language abilities but also in their problem-solving and communication skills,” expressed Rodriguez.
The population of the ESL program has remained steady in recent years. While fewer newcomers have arrived this year compared to previous years, the needs of students continue to evolve, however FHS remains committed to meeting their needs.
“The ESL program is truly a strength of FHS.” Said Rodriguez, “It not only supports students developing their English skills, but also fosters a welcoming environment where their cultures, languages and personal experiences are valued … We are dedicated to helping every English learner succeed academically, feel connected socially and graduate with confidence in their abilities and future.”
FHS’s ESL program is truly a valuable asset to the community. ESL demonstrates FHS’s devotion to creating a welcoming environment where languages are celebrated and everyone is heard.
