After ten incredible years in the making, the “Stranger Things” franchise has released its fifth and final season. Known as the series of the decade, the show’s widespread popularity has changed the lives of fans worldwide. With the first volume of season five being released on Nov. 26, 2025, the world would forever be impacted by the official end of the beginning.
Based in the 80s, the sci-fi phenomenon follows a tight-knit group of friends trying to save their small town of Hawkins, Ind., from a monster-infested dimension called the Upside Down. With the help of their telekinetic friend, Eleven, the group travels back and forth between the Upside Down and Hawkins, hoping to one day bring an end to the powerful reign of the main antagonist, Vecna.
The of the idea for the show originated in the childhoods of the creators, the Duffer Brothers. Growing up in Durham, N.C., the Duffers always had a passion for filmmaking. Their parents noticed their strong passion for the art and gifted them a film camera in elementary school. As the years went on, their passion only grew. In high school, their drama teacher lit a spark in them by introducing them to the entertainment world.
Creating the foundation of their teamwork, the Duffers majored in film production at Chapman University. After graduating from college, the Duffers set out straight to creating scripts. Rejection after rejection, they tried to put out their fire, but it only added fuel to the fire. After a few years in the industry, the Duffers wrote a script about a group of friends in the 80s who lived in a small town and discovered a portal to an alternate dimension. Invested in the plot, they went from network to network, hoping that someone would relate to the nostalgic 80s plot and give them a chance to bring to life the small-town adventures of their imagination. In April of 2015, Netflix took them up on their offer and started production on what would soon become one of the biggest shows in the world.
Season one was not projected to reach such a vast audience. By making friendship the show’s cornerstone, “Stranger Things” touched fans worldwide. Everyone fell in love with the bond of four friends, riding bikes in the night, communicating telepathically, and setting traps for monsters to find their kidnapped friend in the Upside Down. Within the first week of its release, season one had over seven million streams. Strong audience demand put the show straight back into production for season two. With a larger plot and more characters, season two was just as successful as, if not more successful than, season one.
Continuing to expand the plot of a successful show can be risky, as fans can become quite critical if something happens unexpectedly, but the Duffers took that risk, and it paid off. Season three was released on July 4, 2019, and quickly became a fan favorite. Fans fell in love with the intricate character dynamics, and the season’s summer setting created a bridge to reality for fans around the world. Season four took the show’s scale and suspense to another level. With adventure after adventure and the season ending on a cliffhanger, the anticipation for season five was at an all-time high.
“Stranger Things 5” was released in three volumes. Volume one on Nov. 26, 2025, volume two on Dec. 25, 2025, and volume three on Dec. 31, 2025. Hours before the release of volume one, fans took over social media, discussing theories, hopes, and new plotlines. Then, volume one was released, and the Duffer Brothers did not disappoint. The feedback from volume one was extremely positive and optimistic. Everyone enjoyed seeing their favorite characters on screen again for one final season. Volume one became home to exciting new plotlines, characters, and many unanswered questions. Part of the show’s appeal comes from the small details fans can dissect and try to answer in later episodes. Ending volume one with an unexpected cliffhanger, fans could hardly wait a month until volume two.
To everyone’s relief, volume two’s opening scene began right where volume one left off. Building tension and anticipation throughout the volume, fans traveled through heartfelt, heartbreaking and suspenseful scenes. Volume two never gave viewers a dull moment. Action-packed and plot-twist-filled, the episodes allowed fans to put together puzzle pieces not only from season five but also from earlier seasons. Ending in another jaw-dropping cliffhanger, the world was put on edge for the six-day wait until the finale, volume three’s release.
The over two-hour-long final episode had fans screaming, crying and laughing with the characters. The anticipation for the finale was so intense that Netflix decided to release it in theatres nationwide. The finale was truly fulfilling, ending a decade-long show full of hard times, loss, love, heartbreak, change and adventure on the true point of the show: friendship. While there couldn’t have been a dry eye watching that finale episode, fans were pleasantly surprised by the optimism and childlike wonder the show ended on.
The Duffer Brothers truly encapsulated what true friendship means and can accomplish. This story became so much more than just a show; it became a lifestyle. Fans have grown up with these characters over the past ten years. Every change and challenge the characters faced was, in some way, relatable to the audience. The Duffer Brothers created characters who made fans feel like they had another family in this show.
The amazing cast shared some of the most remarkable on-screen chemistry today. Their incredible portrayal of these characters resonated with fans and created a worldwide phenomenon. Impactful performances from Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven), Finn Wolfhard (Mike Wheeler) and the other supporting roles created an emotionally beautiful viewing experience for all audiences. Among the many notable performances in season five, Sadie Sink (Max Mayfield) and Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas Sinclair) delivered one of the season’s most heartfelt scenes, connecting with fans around the globe.
“Stranger Things” proved to be a remarkable and nostalgic reminder of how important friendship is. This show redefined a generation to be adventurous, not to judge creativity, and to push harder than ever to keep friendship alive. While the main show has closed its door, “Stranger Things” fans all over the world are “keeping the door open three inches” for the next adventure of the “Stranger Things” franchise.
