As the holiday season rolls around here at Fauquier High School (FHS), many clubs do something special for Christmas, whether that's donating or spreading kindness. Clubs such as the National Honor Society (NHS), Morgan's Message (MM) and the Student Council Association (SCA) all contribute to giving and helping benefit the community.
The NHS is collecting Toys for Tots donations during the winter season. Irene Awunganyi, president of the NHS, shared what they will be doing: “For the Christmas season…we're gonna donate a bunch of different toys to families that are in need or families that can't afford to have Christmas this year.”
NHS chose this act of service for the winter season earlier in the year, “We get together at the beginning of the year and we come up with a bunch of different volunteer or donation activities,” Irene continues, “we had our NHS members vote on which they want the most and Toys for Tots won.”
MM is another club that does something special during chilly months. Natalie Noland is an ambassador for MM and is very active throughout the club. For Christmas, they plan on having at-home meetings. “We decorate a lot of ornaments for the Christmas tree at [FHS], which is located in the main lobby. Most of the time, we do goody bags as well for the end of the semester,” Noland stated. The goody bags are filled with motivation for MM members to get through the rest of the year, especially with midterms and finals. Noland continued, “The ornaments are just something we do at club meetings, and it's like a fun activity.” Another fun activity Morgan's Message is a part of are “basketball games [where] students can try to win a [MM] t-shirt by making a half-court shot,” explained Noland. Finally, the big activity that MM does is participating in the Christmas parade, “We throw out candy with motivational [phrases] on them,” Noland said.
Here at FHS the students and teachers love the spirit weeks, dressing for the funny and unique themes. Michelle Green, the head of SCA, had the organization set up a spirit week for the Christmas season. “For Christmas we have our spirit week which is going to be December 15 to
the 19 and each day that week we will have a theme,” said Green. The themes for this spirit week are a variety of things and students will be very creative when dressing up. “Monday is
going to be the night before Christmas,” Green stated, “so we're hoping people come to school wearing holiday themed comfy clothing. Tuesday will be Whoville Tuesday, so we're hoping students will dress as any character from the movie Grinch, Green continued, “Wednesday every class has a character theme, all the seniors could dress up as Santas, juniors would be the Grinches, sophomores get to be dressed up as reindeer and then the freshmen will be dressed up as elves. Thursday is “Holiday Sweater” and Friday is “Flannel Friday.”
The clubs are celebrating the Christmas season in many different ways such as decorating across the school with holiday spirit, donating to families in need and showing kindness to each other. The members of NHS, MM and SCA are excited about these acts of service, and the students and staff here at FHS can't wait for the Christmas season to begin.
