The Sports Analytics Club has emerged at Fauquier High School (FHS), providing students with the opportunity to combine their passion for sports with strategy and business management.
Founded by juniors Jonah Mossman and Said Lamas, this new club aims to go beyond the scoreboard and the latest sports news.
“We at the Sports Analytics Club don’t just want to examine who wins or loses,” Mossman said, “We want to understand why things happened the way they did and how we can predict future outcomes.”
The Sports Analytics Club, like all clubs at FHS, boasts an environment of collaboration and hospitality. Each Wednesday, during AE, members assemble with club host Mr. Konstanty in Room 425 to share their opinion, strategize, debate and apply real-world data to predict the outcomes of professional and collegiate sports.
During their first meeting, members of the Sports Analytics Club attended a meeting with the Washington Wizards’ analyst. They discussed the financial role behind the customer experience and how analytics influence decisions made by professional sports teams. Mossman and Lamas say this was just the start.
“This meeting was the first of many, and we hope to meet many more people who work in the field of sports in the future,” Lamas stated
Currently, the roster consists of 13 members, although Mossman and Lamas say their priority is not size.
“Quality engagement is worth more than numbers. We want people who actually contribute to the club to join,” Mossman stated.
Sports analytics has become increasingly popular among fans. With newly gained access to professional sports analyst data through sites like NBA.com, MLB Statcast, and the ever-so-popular fantasy leagues, fans can become amateur analysts themselves.
Additionally, the field of sports analytics and management has experienced significant growth in recent years. This field now extends beyond just watching games to exploring critical skills such as psychology, chemistry, nutrition, and finance. With a growing number of career opportunities and an increase in public interest, analytics has become an integral part of everyday conversation. It was only a matter of time until this trend reached the halls of FHS.
